Engineering with the Community

As 2015 begins to wind up, all of us at EIT and IDC Technologies would like to wish you a safe and pleasant year end. Traditionally this is a time of good cheer so here are a couple of engineering tales which embrace the concepts of sustainability, generosity and ingenuity. For many of us urban dwellers it is often difficult to imagine life in small and isolated communities, particularly outside of our familiar cultural parameters. But it is within these environments that a South African company makes a difference...

An Invention and Tips from the Inventor on Inventing

One does wonder how many millions of ideas and indeed inventions fail to see the light of day.

The topic raises some interesting questions. Are there traits typical to inventors, for example and does the commercial successes of an invention (and its protection) always rely on a great deal of money? Or is marketing expertise the key?

Engineering through Thick and Thin

Although they vary in intensity and length economic booms and busts seem to see-saw along.

Walking through the business area of West Perth in Western Australia this week it is clear that the effects of the latter persist, with the potent resources sector suffering damagingly low commodity prices. Professional office space for sale or for lease abound. The cafes are lacklustre and the retailers which had ably supported this vibrant mining hub, are either shuttered, or if open, are using extravagant sales to tempt shoppers in off the quiet streets.
